What is Extinction Rebellion Hornsby Shire?

Updated: Jan 12, 2020

Major Goal; working towards a future where human induced climate change is mitigated as much as possible

Sub goals;

· Change the attitudes of our community to take climate change and the extinction crisis seriously

· Encourage the community to take part in peaceful non-violent activism aimed at changing the politics of Australia, using the demands of the Extinction Rebellion movement.

The extinction rebellion movement is worldwide. It was formed because we are undergoing a mass extinction event. A UN report covering 50 countries warns we could lose 1 million species, a catastrophe that impacts our “economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life worldwide.” They found “Through ‘transformative change’, nature can still be conserved, restored and used sustainably. By transformative change, we mean a fundamental, system-wide reorganization across technological, economic and social factors, including paradigms, goals and values.” (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/blog/2019/05/nature-decline-unprecedented-report/)

People are uniting on mass and demanding that these changes are implemented. The demands are;

1.   Tell the truth; Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency

2.    Act now; Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025

3.   Beyond Politics; Government must create and be led by the decisions of a citizen’s assembly on climate and ecological justice

Our group is focusing on education. We are raising awareness about the climate emergency, extinction crisis, and the extinction rebellion movement. We want to encourage people to take action. Sitting on the sidelines does nothing. This is a massive movement, and movements only succeed when people come together to demand change.
